Nabadiganta at Salt Lake Sector V, had no organized water supply & sewerage system. This water supply and sewerage project was conceived by UD Department of Government of West Bengal, KMDA & NDITA to create infrastructures on BOT basis in PPP Model.
The influencing Factors for the Project were:-
i) Indiscriminate abstraction of ground water in Nabadiganta Area causing depletion of natural ground water table and harming the environment
ii) Unhygienic arsenic contaminated ground water drawn from bore-wells
iii) Disposal of untreated sewage polluting environment.
Naba Diganta Water Management Limited (NDWML), a Joint Venture (JV) of Tata Steel Utilities & Infrastructure Services Ltd. (Tata Steel UISL) and VOLTAS (both TATA Enterprises), was selected as private partners through a tendering process to build and operate the project. A Development Agreement was signed between NDITA, KMDA and NDWML in 2007 giving NDWML a mandate to provide services for 30 years. The entire infrastructure was created at a cost of about Rs. 72Crores. This is a pioneering PPP project in Urban Infrastructure Sector in the state of West Bengal and India.
